Wauquiez calls on parties to establish a "sanitary cordon around LFI", Bompard responds

A media spat took place this weekend between Republican Right MP Laurent Wauquiez and the national coordinator of La France Insoumise (La France Insoumise), Manuel Bompard, after the former called on the "republican parties" to establish a "sanitary cordon" around LFI.

"I call on all Republican parties to establish a cordon sanitaire around LFI," the Haute-Loire MP declared in an interview with the Journal du Dimanche on Saturday. He accuses the Radical Left Party of "exploiting" the tragedy of the assassination of Aboubakar Cissé in a mosque in the Gard region on April 25.

The right-wing politician does not mince his words, accusing his political enemies, among other things, of being "a threat to the Republic" and to France, "the party of national destruction" and "a Trojan horse of Islamism."

Laurent Wauquiez also announced his intention to propose to the National Assembly the creation of a commission of inquiry into "the links between La France Insoumise and Islamist networks."

The LFI national coordinator responded to him on Sunday on LCI, accusing him of being "adrift."

"Every week, Mr Wauquiez comes up with more outrageous proposals than the week before," Manuel Bompard said, taking the example of the right-wing MP's idea of ​​sending dangerous people under OQTF ( obligation to leave French territory ) to the island of Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon .

"I believe this commission of inquiry will never see the light of day," added the rebel, denouncing the measures as "not serious." According to him, Laurent Wauquiez's attacks are the result of the battle he is waging with Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau for the presidency of the Les Républicains party, whose election is scheduled for May 17. "Mr. Wauquiez realizes that Mr. Retailleau is competing with him in an equally outrageous manner," said Manuel Bompard.
